WHAT WE DO

Macduff Dental Surgery was established in 1988 and offers an excellent standard of dental care for all the family in modern and well equipped surroundings. Our dedicated and experienced team of dental care workers together offer a comprehensive range of dental treatments using the most up to date materials and technology. Providing regular dental advice and helping you understand how to take care of your teeth will reduce your need for dental treatment.

Infection control is a high priority at Macduff Dental. A recent extension has given us a large dedicated Local Decontamination Unit (LDU). This is equipped with most up to date equipment. All the staff are fully trained in the use of the LDU and training is updated on a regular basis.

At Macduff Dental we try to introduce oral health care from a very early age and aim to prevent unnecessary treatments and alleviate fears of the dental practice. We encourage new parents to attend Childsmile sessions provided by our Extended Duty Nurse, who together with the whole team aim to provide a programme of Childsmile Care for the individual child or family throughout their formative years.

Hygiene and Preventative Oral Care

Our dedicated hygienists aim to compliment the dentist in caring for your teeth and gums. They help you look after and care for your teeth by providing regular treatments and advising you on how best to look after your mouth. It has been well documented that your general health can be detrimentally affected by poor oral hygiene and gum disorders. It can also significantly reduce the need for future dental treatment.
Our hygienists provide fissure sealants for the children. Placing a permanent coating on the back teeth to allow for easier cleaning and sealing the teeth.
They give dietary advice tailored to your age and life style.

Childsmile

By introducing oral healthcare from a very early age we aim to prevent unnecessary treatments and alleviate fears of the dental practice.
Here at Macduff Dental we encourage new parents to attend Childsmile sessions provided by our Extended Duty Dental Nurse, who together with the whole of the dental team aims to provide a programme of Childsmile care for the individual child or family throughout their formative years

Visit the Childsmile Website for more information on the program

The programme includes
Initial visit to EDDN when baby is about 4 months old:
· Oral health advice on healthy weaning, diet, teething and toothbrushing instruction.
· Annual or more frequent visits if required to EDDN for updates and progression of Oral Health Advise

Visits to the Dentist begin at 12-18 months
· Annual dental check-ups and treatment, if required.
· Fluoride varnish applications from two years old. Research shows that fluoride varnish is highly effective at reducing tooth decay if it is applied at least twice a year.

Extended Duty Dental Nurses (EDDNs) from Childsmile practices are trained in oral health promotion and fluoride varnish application to support the dental team to provide Childsmile care.

Restorative

We provide the choice of conventional amalgam silver fillings on back teeth or aesthetic tooth coloured restorations (where applicable).
T the NHS terms and conditions do not allow for certain aesthetic white fillings. These can be provided on a private basis and can be discussed with the patient and parent as they arise.
Only white fillings are used on front teeth.

Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal Treatment or Endodontics, is the dental procedure to treat infection at the centre of a tooth (the root canal system). The infections are caused by bacteria that live in the mouth which have invaded the tooth either when a tooth has decayed, a filling has leaked or a tooth has been damaged by trauma or a fall. In root canal treatment, once the bacteria are removed, the root canal is filled and the tooth sealed with a filling or a crown. In most cases, any inflamed tissues at the end of the tooth will heal naturally. The alternative to root treating a tooth is to have the tooth removed (extracted).

Dentures

Both full and partial (where only one or several teeth are lost)
We offer a range of dentures depending on the quality of tooth and denture base. The bases are predominately plastic but metal and flexible materials are also available for some cases. The dentist will advise on the merits of the different dentures we offer.
It is advisable even if you wear full dentures to have a full oral health check every 24 months.
Only dentists or suitable qualified clinical technicians can provide dentures
.

Crowns, veneers and bridges

A full variety of crowns and bridges in both metal, ceramic and the more aesthetic all ceramic materials are available. Their suitability and cost is discussed with the individual patient as their need arises. Veneers which reduce tooth loss necessary to improve aesthetics on stained, filled or malformed teeth are also an option in certain situations.

Tooth Whitening

Tooth Whitening is a non destructive procedure which the patient delivers at home in the custom made trays provided. It a can considerably improve the appearance of the teeth. It will not whiten existing fillings, veneers or crowns. These might have to be replaced after whitening if a full makeover is required.
A full mouth examination is required (including recent radiographs) to assess your suitability for tooth whitening. Any necessary conservations and oral hygiene treatment must be carried out first.
Only a registered dentist or suitably trained hygienist should provide tooth whitening. See the GDC Information

Dental Implants

More and more people are keeping their teeth longer and do not wish to wear a denture. In a vast majority of cases a dental implant can replace a tooth and prevent the dreaded denture. Titanium Implants have been well proven to be a sound and reliable replacement for a tooth or teeth. We can assess your suitablily and provide you with dental implants here at Macduff Dental.

Orthodontics

Within the NHS, orthodontic care for children under 18 can be provided free if the need for treatment is great enough. Minor problems are excluded however. Your dentist will assess if NHS treatment is available or will refer you for an opinion/treatment if required. We can provide a limited range of orthodontic treatments in house.
Minor orthodontic anomalies can still be treated on a private basis either in house or on referral
Private orthodontics for adult patients can be assessed and referred as required.
